‘India ka kya badla lega re tu!’ – Fans slam South Africa for losing Women’s 20-20 World Cup final against Australia

Another year, another World Cup for Australia Women.

On 26 February 2023, the stage was set for an enthralling final between South Africa Women and Australia Women in the Women’s 20-20 World Cup final. The defending champions were looking to win the title once again for the third consecutive year. In contrast, the host nation were looking to win their first World Cup. 

The final took place in Cape Town as fans were expecting a great final between the sides. The Aussies defeated the Women in Blue while the Proteas defeated England women. Speaking of the final, Australia Women won the toss and elected to bat first. Both Alyssa Healy and Beth Mooney came out to open the innings.

However, Healy managed just 18 runs off 20 balls. But, Mooney scored 74 runs off 53 balls, including nine fours and one six. Along with them, Ashleigh Gardner scored 29 runs off 21 balls. Other batters came up with some contributions as Australia Women finished their innings at 156 runs for six wickets in 20 overs. For the Proteas, Shabnim Ismail and Marizanne Kapp took two wickets each while Chloe Tryon and Nonkululeko Mlaba took one wicket each. However, the home fans were expecting a solid batting performance from the Proteas Women during the chase. But, they failed to get a good start after losing three wickets for 54 runs in 10.4 overs. 

Laura Wolvaardt was the lone warrior as she scored 61 runs off 48 balls. She managed to hit five fours and three sixes, with a strike rate of 127.08. Chloe Tyron showed some fight as she scored 25 runs off 23 balls, including two fours and one six. Finally, they managed to score only 137 runs for six wickets in 20 overs. Thus, Australia Women won the final by 19 runs and got their sixth Women’s 20-20 World Cup title. Beth Mooney won the player of the match award while Ashleigh Gardner won the player of the tournament award. Seeing such domination from the Australia Women, fans were in awe while some fans were not happy with the performance of the South Africa Women.
