India lost the second ODI to Australia in humiliating fashion by 10 wickets as the Aussies tied the series at 1-1. The hosts completed a customary victory in the first match of the series at Wankhede by five wickets but could not continue their winning streak. Mitchell Marsh and Mitchell Starc starred in a comprehensive Australia performance as the Men in Blue flopped big time in the game. Here are three reasons behind India’s horrible show in the second ODI at Vishakhapatnam.

3. Playing one less pacer

The pacers made the difference for the visitors in the second ODI as Mitchell Starc returned with a five-wicket haul. Sean Abbott and Nathan Ellis cleaned up the rest five wickets. Conversely, India played three spinners on a flat track with only two pure pacers – Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj. Playing a more consistent pace attack could have woven a different story for the hosts.

2. Top-order collapse

Another major issue in India’s ODI batting has been India’s top order failing more frequently. The inability of the top order to build consistent partnerships was why India bundled out for just 117. Notably, India’s top order was ineffective in the first ODI of the series, with KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja leading a middle-order rescue mission while chasing 189 runs in Mumbai. The same batting woes continued for India in the second ODI of the series as well.

1. Captaincy change

Notably, due to personal commitments, Rohit Sharma was absent for the first ODI against Australia. Hardik Pandya assumed leadership in Rohit Sharma’s absence and did a thorough job. His bowling changes worked perfectly in the first ODI, and Rohit Sharma’s return seemed to work against the team’s interest. Sudden captaincy changes can drastically affect a team, which remained a major reason India failed so disastrously in the second ODI.

The next ODI of the series will be played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on March 22, Wednesday. The game would be the decider with a top spot in the ODI ranking on the line for the visitors.
