MS Dhoni’s first-ever major trophy win in 2007’s 20-20 World Cup recently came under contestation as a Pakistani fan opined that Pakistan could have won the final had Imran Nazir not been run out. The opinion was given out on twitter as a caption to a video where Imran Nazir is being asked which was the easiest bowler he had ever faced that he could hit aggressively. Nazir said S Sreesanth was from 2007 20-20 World Cup final.
It was a memorable final in the New Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg as the Cricket world was ready for the inaugural T20 Champions of the world. India won the toss and elected to bat first. Riding on Gautam Gambhir’s 75 off 54, India reached 157/5 at the end of their 20 overs.
Imran Nazir scored 33 off 14 before getting run out
In reply, Pakistan started in their top gear, with Imran Nazir scoring 33 off just 14 balls. The rest of the batters were pretty ordinary in their batting efforts, and in the end, it was a close and nervous ending that saw India risk giving the final over to Joginder Sharma. Sharma, in return, lived up to the captain’s expectations dismissing Misbah-ul-Haq in the third ball of the final over to win the game for India.
While the fan’s statement also said that 2007 20-20 World Cup inspired the start of the Indian T20 League in 2008, a lot of Indian fans refuted saying ITL was actually a result of the ICL or the Indian Championship League. The tweet has received a lot of attention, and most of them are trolling for their lack of awareness in making such a big claim.
Notably, Pakistan supposedly won 2009 20-20 World Cup after their players took part in the Indian T20 League in 2008. However, the whole opinion is largely subjective and has not been taken lightly by most fans. Interestingly, following the massive terror attack on November 26, 2008, Pakistani players have been banned from participating in the Indian T20 League.
Here’s how fans reacted to the opinion:
You Pakistanis always find a reason to cry when u loose. Like that i can also say agar pandya run out na hota toh CT final ka result kuch aur hota

By that logic, if Hardik had not been run out in the Champions trophy 2017 final, India would have won the Champions trophy 2017… 🤡😂 pic.twitter.com/iGyiOjbIQi

For not getting run out and winning World Cup, you need commitment standard of @GautamGambhir pic.twitter.com/XCzOHr778w
