Sanju Samson, the Indian wicketkeeper, was rested for the entire T20I series against New Zealand and much to the stupefaction of the Indian fans, the batter was dropped for the second ODI played on November 27, Sunday. While the captain Shikhar Dhawan claimed that it was only to rope in a sixth bowler, fans claimed that it was clear politics and Samson deserved better treatment.

As things stand, former Pakistani cricketer, Danish Kaneria, opened up on the same and said that the Indian cricket board must not repeat the same mistake that they did to Ambati Rayudu. For the unversed, in 2019, Rayudu was the preferred Number 4 option and for obvious reasons, he was dropped and Vijay Shankar was preferred over him.

Pointing out at the same, Kaneria warned the Indian cricket board and said that the board must back Samson before it’s too late. “We wanted the sixth bowler to come in, so Sanju Samson missed out and Hooda came in. And Chahar was picked because he can swing the ball really well,” Dhawan was quoted as saying after the second ODI was washed out.

Slamming the board, Kaneria said that they must not test Samson’s tolerance level and added that the youngster must be given enough chances to prove his prowess. Reasonably, the right-handed batter has been faring out well for the team in the ongoing year as he has been averaging around 60 in the shortest format of the game.

“Ambati Rayudu’s career ended similarly. He scored a lot of runs, but he also faced zyadti (excessiveness). The reason is Indian cricket board and the selection committee’s internal politics. Is there liking or disliking among players?” Kaneria was quoted as saying this on his YouTube channel.

“How much can a player tolerate? He already tolerates a lot and scores wherever he gets the opportunity. We might lose a good player because he faces the torture of selection and non-selection in the team. Everyone wants to see his strokes in extra-cover, cover, and especially pull shots,” he added.
