During the recently concluded mega auction, Kolkata purchased Shreyas Iyer for a whopping amount of INR 12.5 crore. Recently, he was announced as the team’s new captain as well. The Indian batter was initially with Delhi, and has a successful captaincy stint for them.

While he worked with Ricky Ponting at Delhi, Iyer is all set to work with Brendon McCullum this time around, who happens to be the head coach of the two-time champions. The Kiwi legend is widely regarded to have one of the smartest cricket brains. Under him, Kolkata reached the final of the 2021 edition.

Thus, Iyer had heaps of praises for McCullum. During an interview with the Kolkata-based franchise, the Mumbai batter felt that the 40-year-old was an aggressive coach. He felt that the New Zealander was a risk-taker. Iyer was looking forward to working with him.

I’ve had a few interactions with Brendon McCullum after the auction: Shreyas Iyer

“Brendon McCullum as a coach I feel is very aggressive. Even when you saw him playing for his country (New Zealand), he was someone who was very aggressive and he is kind of a risk-taker. And I absolutely love that. Obviously, I’ve had a few interactions with him after the auction. He’s got that calm demeanour and I’m really looking forward to working with him, and to have some very successful seasons for Kolkata over the years,” said Shreyas Iyer.

In the meanwhile, the 27-year-old was absolutely thrilled to be representing Kolkata. He also appreciated all the great work done by players in the past for the franchise. Thus, he stated that he too would like to follow their footsteps.

“You know, for me to be part of the Kolkata family is an enormous feeling. I want to really appreciate the work which has been done by all the great players in the past and I would like to follow the same footsteps, which they have created for Kolkata,” he said.
