On 20 May 2023, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) locked horns with Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the ongoing IPL. The 68th match of the competition took place at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Before this clash, KKR were in seventh place with 12 points in 13 games. While LSG were in the third spot with 15 points in 13 games.

However, LSG were looking for a win to seal their place in the top four. While KKR were looking for a win to spoil the party. Speaking of the match, Nitish Rana won the toss and opted to bowl first. For LSG, Karan Sharma and Quinton de Kock came out as openers. But, KKR bowlers managed a good start as LSG lost their first wicket within three overs.

LSG defeated KKR by one run

Karan scored just three runs while de Kock scored 28 runs off 27 balls, including two sixes. Prerak Mankad played some shots before getting out on 26 runs off 20 balls, including five fours. Then, they had a collapse as LSG were at 73 runs for five wickets in 10.1 overs. After that, Ayush Badoni scored 25 runs off 21 balls. Nicholas Pooran played a counter-attacking knock as he smashed 58 runs off 30 balls, including four fours and five sixes. Krishnappa Gowtham scored 11* runs off four balls as LSG scored 176 runs for eight wickets in 20 overs. For KKR, Vaibhav Arora, Shardul Thakur, and Sunil Narine took two wickets each.

While both Harshit Rana and Varun Chakravarthy grabbed one wicket each. In reply, KKR managed a good start as Venkatesh Iyer and Jason Roy put up a partnership of 61 runs in 5.5 overs. Iyer scored 24 runs off 15 balls while Roy smashed 45 runs off 28 balls, including seven fours and one six. After that, other batters failed miserably but Rinku stood alone as he smashed a fifty off just 27 balls. Thus, in the last over, KKR needed 21 runs with three wickets in the bag. But, Rinku tried hard and managed 19 runs only as KKR lost the match by just one run. With this win, LSG became the third team to get qualified for the playoffs. Rinku remained not out on 67* runs off 33 balls, including six fours and four sixes.
