The debutants of the Indian T20 League 2022, Gujarat defeated Rajasthan in the finals to lift the trophy while defying all odds. After the win, the fans and experts heaped their praises on Hardik Pandya and his players for their performances on the field. The two men who remained behind the scenes and let the players bask in the glory were Asish Nehra and Gary Kirsten.

Notably, Ashish Nehra became the first Indian coach to win the Indian T20 League title in the history of the tournament. Gary Kirsten recently revealed the mantra and philosophy of Nehra as a coach. The former Indian pace bowler is a believer in having different strategies and backup plans for the toughest of the situations in a T20 match.

“Ashish wants his players to have options and he helps them understand when to use them. A set game plan is not possible in the IPL; the matches are extremely complex with new scenarios happening all the time. This requires in-the-moment planning and players who can think for themselves and adjust a game plan or use a different strategy in an over. As coaches, we help the players think through this,”-said Kirsten during a conversation with Cricbuzz.

The duo has worked in close quarters while Gary Kirsten was coaching team India and Nehra was playing for the team. Later they also worked for the Bangalore team before being sacked by the franchise. During the same conversation, Kirsten also praised the understanding of the game of Nehra and how he manages to keep himself out of the spotlight.

“Ashish is a close friend and we have walked a long journey together. As a player, I enjoyed his willingness to keep understanding his game and his professionalism. He coaches with his heart, always thinking about his players and how he can help them. He’s low profile and does not like the spotlight. He is tactically one of the best coaches in the IPL and is always talking to his players about how to make better performances,”- added Kirsten.
