On 9 April 2023, Gujarat Giants (GT) took on Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the ongoing IPL. The defending champion won both of their first matches. While KKR won their last game after losing the first one. So, the stage was set in Ahmedabad for an enthralling battle between these sides.
However, Hardik Pandya missed the match as Rashid Khan came out for the toss for GT. He won the toss and opted to bat first. At the toss, Rashid said that Pandya was a little unwell and hence, they did not take any risk. For GT, Shubman Gill and Wriddhiman Saha came out to open the innings.
KKR defeated GT by three wickets in IPL 2023
Saha scored 17 runs while Gill scored 39 runs off 31 balls. Shubman Gill smashed five fours in his innings. Then, Sai Sudharsan played another solid inning of 53 runs off 38 balls, including three fours and two sixes. After that, Vijay Shankar played a blistering knock as he smashed all KKR bowlers all around the park. Shankar scored 63* runs off 24 balls, including four fours and five sixes. Thus, finally, Gujarat posted 204 runs for four wickets in 20 overs. For KKR, Sunil Narine took three wickets for 33 runs in four overs. Along with him, Suyash Sharma took one wicket.
For the chase, Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Narayan Jagadeesan came out as openers. But, Gurbaz scored only 15 runs while Jagadeesan scored only six runs. Then, Venkatesh Iyer came out as an impact player. He and Nitish Rana put up a solid partnership of 100 runs before Rana got out on 45 runs off 29 balls. The KKR skipper smashed four fours and three sixes. Iyer also got out after scoring 83 runs off 40 balls, including eight fours and five sixes. After that, Rashid Khan showed his class and took the first hat trick of this ongoing edition of the tournament during the 17th over. Thus, in one over, KKR went from 155/4 to 155/7 and the momentum got shifted toward the home side completely. In the last over, KKR needed 29 runs and Rinku Singh smashed five consecutive sixes against Yash Dawal. Thus, Kolkata won the match by three wickets from the jaws of defeat.
