Delhi decided to remove Yash Dhull as captain just hours after suffering a comprehensive 9-wicket defeat to Puducherry in their opening match of the Ranji Trophy 2024 season at home. This move by Delhi adds to the series of questionable selection decisions that have plagued the team in the recent past, marking a challenging period for the once-domestic giants.
Delhi faced a resounding defeat by 9 wickets against the less-favoured Puducherry in an Elite Group D match at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Monday, January 8. Captain Yash Dhull, who captained India in the U19 World Cup in 2022, faced difficulties against the Puducherry fast bowlers in seamer-friendly conditions in the capital. He scored 2 and 23 in the two innings as Delhi failed to surpass 150 in the first-class match.
Himmat Singh is slated to captain Delhi in their upcoming away game against Jammu and Kashmir on January 12. Himmat Singh, six years senior to Yash Dhull, has previous experience as the stand-in skipper during Dhull's absence. Singh boasts an impressive batting record, accumulating 1174 runs with an average of 39.13. Moreover, he maintained a remarkable average of 45.25 in 22 First-Class games last season.
Yash is a talented player but is out of form: DDCA Joint Secretary
The joint secretary of the Delhi District Cricket Association (DDCA), Rajan Manchanda explained that the decision to remove Yash Dhull from the captaincy was aimed at aiding the young batter in regaining form. The state body made this decision with the team's best interests in mind. Regarding Delhi's upcoming Ranji Trophy match against Jammu & Kashmir, it was disclosed that Navdeep Saini and Ishant Sharma would not be part of the travelling squad. Saini was selected in the India A squad facing England, while veteran Ishant Sharma would be available only for the team's home games.
"Yash is a talented player but is out of form. We wanted him to do well as a batter, that is why we have relieved him of captaincy duties. Himmat is our senior player and has done very well for us. He will captain the side," Manchanda said, as reported by India Today.
