The stage was set at the Chepauk stadium on 12 April 2023 as Chennai Super Kings (CSK) locked horns with Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the ongoing IPL. Both teams began their campaign with two wins out of three games. So, home crowds were hoping for another win from MS Dhoni and his men.

However, Trent Boult missed the clash due to a niggle. Hence, it was a major blow for RR and they also lost the toss. MS Dhoni opted to bowl and they handed a debut cap to Akash Singh. For RR, Jos Buttler and Yashasvi Jaiswal came out to open the innings. But, Jaiswal scored only 10 runs off eight balls.

RR defeated CSK by three runs in IPL 2023

Then, Devdutt Padikkal played some good shots as he scored 38 runs off 26 balls. He put up a partnership of 77 runs with Buttler. Buttler scored another fifty before getting out on 52 runs off 36 balls. He hit one four and three fours in his innings. Ashwin also played an important knock as he scored 30 runs. Shimron Hetmyer scored a blistering unbeaten 30 runs off 18 balls. Finally, they put up 175 runs for eight wickets in 20 overs. For CSK, Ravindra Jadeja, Akash Singh, and Tushar Deshpande took two wickets each. While Moeen Ali grabbed one wicket in his two overs.

In reply, CSK failed to get a good start as Ruturaj Gaikwad failed cheaply for eight runs off 10 balls. Devon Conway finally showed some form as he scored 50 runs off 38 balls, including six fours. Then, Ajinkya Rahane scored 31 runs off 19 balls including two fours and one six. After that, all batters failed miserably as RR bowlers showed great composure in the middle overs. Ravindra Jadeja and MS Dhoni tried their best to chase down the target. But, they fell short by three runs as CSK scored 172 runs for six wickets in 20 overs. For RR, both Ashwin and Chahal took two wickets each while Adam Zampa and Sandeep Sharma grabbed one wicket each.
