Chennai locked horns with Lucknow in the ongoing Indian T20 League 2023 on 3 April. However, the match was at Chennai's home ground, Chepauk stadium, and the match took place after a long gap of 1426 days. MS Dhoni and his men lost the first game against Gujarat while Lucknow defeated Delhi.
Speaking of the match, KL Rahul won the toss and asked Chennai to bat first. The home side did not make any changes from the playing XI of the last game. On the other hand, Lucknow brought Yash Thakur into the lineup in place of Jaydev Unadkat. For the home side, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway came out to open the innings.

For the first wicket, they both put up a partnership of 110 runs. Gaikwad and Conway played some outstanding shots all around the field. The star young batter from India scored 57 runs off 31 balls, including three fours and four sixes. Then, the Kiwi batter scored 47 runs off 29 balls, including five fours and two sixes. Then, other batters came up with some contributions but MS Dhoni stole the show in the last over. He came and hit two sixes in three balls as Dhoni scored 12 runs off three balls. Thus, Chennai scored 217 runs for seven wickets in 20 overs. Ravi Bishnoi and Mark Wood took three wickets each for Lucknow.
For Lucknow, KL Rahul and Kyle Mayers came out to open and tore apart Chennai’s bowlers in the first six overs. They scored 80 runs in six overs for one wicket. Mayers scored 53 runs off 22 balls while Rahul scored 20 runs off 18 balls. Then, in the middle overs, Chennai spinners showed their class as Lucknow reached 125 runs in 12 overs for four wickets. Moeen Ali took four wickets for 26 runs in four overs. Finally, they managed to score 205 runs for seven wickets in 20 overs. Thus, Chennai defeated them by 12 runs.
