The Asia Cup generally takes place every two years but the 2020 edition was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Asian Cricket Council attempted to conduct it during 2021 but to no avail. The pandemic once again acted as a barrier.

Another important point to be noted is that this edition of the Asia Cup will be played in T20 format. This will be just the second time when the tournament will be played in this format. The first being in 2016, which saw India win their sixth title.  Besides, India are the most successful team in Asia Cup history as they have won the title seven times.

They won the Asia Cup title in 1984, 1988, 1990/91, 1995, 2010, 2016 and 2018. Behind them are Sri Lanka, who have won the title five times, i.e. in 1986, 1997, 2004, 2008 and 2014. As far as Pakistan are concerned, they have won the title twice (2002 and 2012).

On the other hand, Bangladesh have made it to the final thrice. The Asia Cup 2022 will see six teams- India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan and a qualifier team compete for the title. The teams that will be competing in the qualifiers are UAE, Kuwait, Hong Kong and Singapore.

While UAE and Kuwait have progressed from 2020 ACC Western Region T20, the two far-eastern countries have progressed from the 2020 ACC Eastern Region T20.

In the meanwhile, BCCI secretary Jay Shah's tenure as the President of Asian Cricket Council has been extended until the 2024 ACC AGM.
