India and Australia dew swords with each other in the first ODI of the three-match series in Mohali. The Men in Blue won the toss and chose to bowl first. Australia did not get off to the best of starts as all-rounder Mitchell Marsh was sent packing by Mohammed Shami with a superb delivery after scoring just a run-a-ball four.

Even though Australia suffered a jolt, David Warner went great guns after he was dropped on 14 by Shreyas Iyer. The left-hander cracked a stroke-filled 52 off 53 balls with six fours and three sixes. But he was dismissed when he tried to hit Ravindra Jadeja out of the ground. Smith was also looking in great touch until he was dismissed by another unplayable delivery from Shami.

Marnus Labuschagne came in at number four and made 39 off 49 balls with three fours but he got in unfortunate circumstances. Ravichandran Ashwin bowled a ball that was tossed up. Labuschagne tried to reverse sweep and got the ball off the splice of the bat, the ball hit KL Rahul's pads and then ricochets onto the stumps.

Steve Smith and Pat Cummins are coming off injuries for Australia

There was an appeal for the stumping. The decision was referred to the third umpire and it was seen from the footage that Labuschagne's boot was on the line when the zing bails lit up which meant that Labuschagne had to walk back to the dressing room. It was a lucky breakthrough for India and Ravichandran Ashwin as the right-hander was looking good to make a big score.

For the first two ODIs, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were rested and Iyer along with Ashwin earned a comeback into the Indian side. Iyer played only two fixtures in Asia Cup 2023 and Ashwin last played an ODI for India against South Africa in 2022. For Australia. Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Steve Smith were coming off injuries. They did not play the ODIs and T20Is against South Africa.
