‘Babar ka 9 run kaam aa gaya’ - Fans react as Colombo Strikers defeat B-Love Kandy by 9 runs in LPL 2023

On 13 August 2023, Colombo Strikers (CS) were in action against B-Love Kandy (BLK) in the 18th match of the ongoing Lanka Premier League (LPL) in Colombo. CS were looking for a win to keep them alive in the race for the playoffs while BLK were looking to strengthen their grip at the top half of the table.

Speaking of the match, CS skipper, Chamika Karunaratne won the toss and opted to bat first. However, Babar Azam failed to score big as he got out on nine runs off eight balls. But, it was another opener, Pathum Nissanka who scored 51 runs off 38 balls, including four fours and one six. Apart from him, Nipun Dhananjaya scored 40 runs off 29 balls, including one four and three sixes.

Then, some small contributions from the following batters helped them to post a total of 169 runs for nine wickets on the board in 20 overs. For BLK, Isuru Udana, Angelo Mathews, and Wanindu Hasaranga took two wickets each while both Nuwan Pradeep and Chaturanga de Silva grabbed one wicket each. In reply, BLK were in all sorts of trouble after losing four wickets for 70 runs in 10.1 overs. Skipper Hasaranga scored 40 runs off 21 balls, including six fours and one six.

Apart from him, only Asif Ali scored 33 runs off 15 balls while Ashen Bandara scored 22 runs off 18 balls. But, they fell short by just nine runs and thus, CS registered their third win of the season. Nissanka won the Player of the Match award and during the post-match presentation, he claimed that he has been learning a lot from his opening partner and the Pakistan skipper, Babar Azam while heaping praises on him. He said: "Babar is experienced and world class. Learning a lot from him. Just played with the flow after his wicket and I thought I still had 10-15 more runs to add to the team total."
