‘Babar fail toh team bhi fail’ - Fans react as Dambulla Aura defeat Colombo Strikers by 50 runs in LPL 2023

On 12 August 2023, Dambulla Aura (DA) were in action against Colombo Strikers (CS) in the 16th match of the ongoing Lanka Premier League (LPL) in Colombo. DA were looking for another win to strengthen their position at the top of the table while CS were looking to strengthen their chances for getting qualified for the playoffs.

Speaking of the match, DA skipper, Kusal Mendis won the toss and opted to bat first. While batting first, they scored 166 runs for five wickets in 20 overs. Ben McDermott scored 69* runs off 46 balls while Alex Ross scored 52 runs off 38 balls. For CS, Matheesha Pathirana took two wickets while Naseem Shah, Chamika Karunaratne, and Jeffrey Vandersay grabbed one wicket each.

CS suffered their fourth loss of this LPL 2023 against DA 

In reply, all eyes were on the Pakistan skipper, Babar Azam when he came out to open the innings along with Pathum Nissanka. But, he failed after scoring 11 runs off 13 balls. However, no other batters also managed to score big as they got bundled out for just 116 runs in 19.4 overs. Thus, DA won the match by 50 runs and with this win, they are now at the top of the table with five wins (10 points) out of seven games. With the ball, Hasan Ali was the star as he took three wickets for 16 runs in four overs. Along with him, Noor Ahmad, Dushan Hemantha, and Binura Fernando took two wickets each while Janith Liyanage took one wicket.

After the win, Kusal Mendis said: “The pitch is much better today than yesterday. Even though we lost a few wickets in the first few overs, we were able to put on a big partnership through McDermott and Ross, who showed they can perform in these conditions. I have personally only been able to score satisfactorily in one match, but my teammates are scoring heavily and helping the team well. In T20s you only need one or two batters to score heavily. Hopefully I can score in the next games.”
