Shubman Gill, India (Source: Twitter)
Star India batter Shubman Gill, who enjoyed a great run in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023, has been unable to replicate similar success in the longest format of the game. Gill did not fare well in the World Test Championship final of the 2021-23 cycle, scoring just 13 off 15 and 18 off 19 in the two innings, respectively. A similar trend has continued in the ongoing tour of the West Indies. He scored just 6 off 11 in the first Test whereas, in the first innings of the second Test, he got out for just 10 off 12 deliveries.
There could be more reasons for Gill’s poor run of form in the longest format. Firstly, he is batting at the number three spot, replacing Cheteshwar Pujara who was surprisingly snubbed for the tour. Although Gill has batted at the number 3 or 4 spot for most of his career with Punjab and India A, he has been primarily used as an opener by the Indian Cricket Team. As such, transitioning to a new role in the team could be a bit of a challenge.
‘We can't judge him on the basis of one innings’ – Vikram Rathour on Shubman Gill
Earlier India’s batting coach Vikram Rathour had supplied his verdict on Shubman Gill. "Three openers were supposed to play, so one had to go at No. 3 and the proposal came from Shubman's end as his rationale was that he had played all his cricket for Punjab and India A at either No. 3 or 4 and that's his real slot in longer format is that," he said.
"We can't judge him on the basis of one innings. He has a lot of time. He has the technique and temperament to play time if required and can also play an attacking game when a move-on is needed. He can move the game forward. That is what we need at No. 3 as it can be advantageous," he added.
Whether it is a problem with Tests or has Shubman Gill lost his scoring touch from the IPL? The same would be soon answered as India will also play three ODIs followed by five T20Is in the remainder of their Caribbean tour.
