5 Players who went in vain during the leadership of MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli

Indian team has witnessed two of the great captains in history in the form of MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli. They both have taken the men in blue to new heights in all the formats of the game. Speaking of MS Dhoni, then he has won all major international tournaments for India under his leadership. India won the 2007 T20 World Cup, 2011 World Cup, and 2013 Championship during the captaincy reign of Dhoni.

On the other hand, Kohli is the most successful Test captain of India whoever led the team. Both of these captains had their unique choices of picking players in the Indian squad and the playing XI as well. But there were also some promising players who couldn’t get enough chances to prove themselves under the captaincy of either Dhoni or Kohli.

So, here we’ll have a look at those five players who didn’t get a chance despite of their deserving candidature into the team. The skill and talents of these players went in vain because of some strange decision on the selection of the playing XI or squad for any match or any series.

One of the promising domestic cricketers who couldn’t continue for a longer time on the national side of the Indian team. In his international career of almost seven years, Tiwary could play only 12 ODIs and three T20Is. Although, he has performed up to the expectations in the restricted opportunities he got.

But, the talented middle-order batter always failed to maintain his permanent position in the Indian team.

In an interview with Sports Tak, Tiwary also talked about the ups and downs of his international career. He also mentioned the role of team management including the skipper in the whole scenario.

“The current management that is backing the players despite failing in 4-5 matches, had it been there when I was playing, it would have helped me because if you remember, I scored a 100 against West Indies and was named Man of the Match. And still got dropped for the next 14 matches, and couldn’t make a place in the Playing XI. It is still a mystery. This question I will definitely ask those who were in charge back then," said Tiwary in his statement.

Amit Mishra

One of the talented spinners of India, who could feature only 68 matches throughout his entire international career. It would be a surprise for anyone to know how a player can get a chance to play only 68 matches in a career of almost more than a decade. The Haryana-based lad made his first international appearance for India 19 years back in the year 2003.

Since then, he has played only 22 Tests, 36 ODIs, and 10 T20Is, he played an international match for India last in the February of 2017.  Speaking of his performances, the 39-year-old has scalped 76 Test wickets, 64 ODI wickets, and 16 T20I wickets respectively.

During the captaincy of Dhoni and Kohli, Amit Mishra always went overshadowed by the other spinners who had the confidence of both the skippers with them. It is quite a bit shocking that the senior spinner had won the award of player of the series in his last ODI series for India.

Manish Pandey

MS Dhoni

The guy who has always delivered up to the expectations whenever he got a chance to play in the Indian team in international matches. Pandey has appeared in 29 ODIs and 39 T20Is respectively since his debut in international cricket back in the year 2015. Even after scoring 566 runs with an average of 33.29 in ODIs and an excellent average of 44.31 in scoring 709 runs in 33 T20Is, he couldn’t cement his place in the Indian team.

During the days, when he was a regular part of the team, the skipper showed very little confidence in him and didn’t give him enough chances in the team. It made very short appearances on the team.

Varun Aaron

The Bengal-based pacer got a chance on the national side of the Indian team on the backs of his bowling heroics in domestic cricket. He was being considered the next big name of pace bowling by experts. His sheer pace was always one of his lethal weapons but he also had to suffer the injuries at regular intervals.

The Jharkhand-born lad made his first international appearance with his under the leadership of MS Dhoni who himself belongs to Jharkhand’s city of Ranchi. Aaron played his first international match in 2011, the year in which India also won the historic cricket world cup.

It was very unfortunate for the youngster that he could get only 9 ODIs to play and a similar number of Tests for the Indian team.

Ambati Rayudu

One of the controversial careers for the Indian team. Despite his early stellar performances in both domestic cricket and the Indian T20 League, Ambati Rayudu had to wait for a long time to make his first international appearance for the Indian team. Batting in 55 ODIs since his debut, Rayudu has scored 1,694 runs with an amazing average of 47.05.

Despite his continuous best performances, Rayudu always got sidelined by the then skippers of the Indian team. He also made it to the headlines after announcing his retirement from international cricket following the selection row during the World Cup 2019.
