Due to a persistent hamstring issue, Jhye Richardson, who was purchased by the Mumbai franchise during the Indian T20 League players' auction, is most likely going to miss the upcoming season. The star Australia pacer initially sustained an injury while playing in the Big Bash League, which caused him to miss a substantial portion of the season. He is now ruled out for the upcoming ODIs against India and will likely miss the season with Mumbai. Here are five players who could step up to replace Richardson in the Mumbai squad for the upcoming season of the Indian T20 League.

At December's players' auction for the Indian T20 League, Adam Milne could not attract a bid. If Jhye Richardson cannot compete in the upcoming season, the Mumbai management may attempt to use Milne. He has participated in 10 Indian T20 League games for various teams, including Mumbai, Chennai, and Bangalore. He brings with him 145 T20 games experience, which the Mumbai franchise may profit from.

2. Riley Meredith

Riley Meredith could be a like-for-like replacement for Jhye Richardson because he possesses a similar pace. Meredith has participated in 13 Indian T20 League games and taken 12 wickets. He was first selected by the Punjab franchise in 2021. He played eight games for Mumbai in 2022, taking eight wickets. Compared to 2021, his performance was substantially better. He took 21 wickets from 14 matches in the 2022–23 Big Bash League, placing himself sixth in the list for wicket-takers, demonstrating his recent form.

Another former Mumbai player, Tymal Mills, could be a potential replacement for Jhye Richardson. Mills specializes in T20 cricket and has been among the wickets in Dubai's recently concluded International T20 League. The left-arm pacer is a serious firepower for any side he plays for due to his disastrous pace. In 13 T20Is for England, he has accumulated 12 wickets with the career-best figures of 3/27. He is a serious option to consider for the Mumbai management.

4. Gerald Coetzee

South Africa's Gerald Coetzee lit up the stage at the recently concluded SA20, the premier T20 League of South Africa. With some considerable experience in franchise cricket now, he can be considered for a replacement role for Jhye Richardson. He is capable of bowling fast and has been in consistent wicket-taking form. The 22-year-old could be one to bet on if the Mumbai management backs a youngster.

5. Dilshan Madushanka

Finally, someone from the sub-continent, Sri Lanka's Dilshan Madushanka, could qualify as the overseas replacement for the injured Jhye Richardson. Although not as fast as Richardson, Madushanka is a capable bowler. The recent series against India should serve as a decent example. The medium pacer consistently picked up wickets in the T20Is and two in the only ODI he featured in. He now has some franchise experience in his CV after playing in the SA20 and can be one for the Mumbai management to keep an eye on.
