Women’s T20 League (WTL) is all set to start with the Gujarat franchise locking horns with the Mumbai-based outfit. The teams are all set for the new dawn in franchise cricket. Finally, it is the Women’s T20 League that is all set to give the young cricketers a big stage to rock.

The teams are starting to prepare for the tournament. Ahead of their inaugural campaign, the Delhi based outfit is yet to announce their captain. The Delhi franchise picked 18 players in the auction held at Jio World Convention Centre, Mumbai. They have picked six foreigners and 12 Indians ahead of the league. Delhi will play their first match against the Bangalore franchise on 5th March.

With a week left, here are the 4 frontrunners to become Delhi franchise’s Captain for WTL 2023.

1: Meg Lanning

Meg Lanning is one of the leading candidates for the captaincy of the Delhi franchise. Meg Lanning, also known as Megastar, currently captains Australia women across all formats. The 30-year-old has won six World Cups across formats. Meg Lanning has two Women’s Cricket World Cup and four 20-20 World Cup under her belt. 

Meg Lanning also holds the record for the most number of centuries in international cricket. She has led the national team to three 20-20 World Cups, as well as captaining the likes of Victoria and the Melbourne Stars.

2: Marizanne Kapp

The Proteas all-rounder has carved out a name and fame for herself in the women’s international cricket. Be it any format, Marizanne Kapp has proved her mettle. She brings a vast experience of 214 games across all formats and is a front runner for captaincy. 

The 33-year-old has scored 1167 runs and 74 wickets from 93 T20 international fixtures for South Africa. The player also holds experience in netball and athletics. Marizanne Kapp is the face of South Africa women’s cricket resurgence since 2014. The bowling all-rounder hopes to handle the mantle of Delhi based outfit and lead them to a memorable victory. 

3: Shafali Verma

Shafali Verma, one of the youngest players in the squad, has an outside chance to become the captain of Delhi franchise. She played an integral part in U-19 India Women’s 20-20 World Cup victory in Senwes Park, Potchefstroom. She was the third highest scorer in the tournament with 172 runs from seven games. 

We know the aggressive opener for her grit, determination and passion towards the sport. If the Delhi franchise are looking for an Indian captain with a futuristic perspective, then Shafali Verma is a go to option. 

4: Laura Harris

The 32-year-old Australian, Laura Harris, is yet to make her debut for the national side. However, the experienced T20 campaigner is not a newcomer. With over 100 games under her belt, we know Laura Harris for her power hitting. In 77 T20 fixtures, Laura Harris has accumulated 643 runs. 

The player brings vast experience and will be one of the players to look out for the Delhi franchise captain.
