Former Indian skipper and veteran batter Virat Kohli played an outstanding knock of 113 runs off 87 balls with 12 boundaries and a six against Sri Lanka in the first of the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka. It was also the second consecutive ODI century for Virat Kohli as he smashed the last one against Bangladesh a month ago on the 10th of December in 2022.
Apart from that, Virat Kohli has also completed 45 ODI centuries in his international career and is now only five centuries from breaking the record of 49 ODI centuries by former legendary Indian batter Sachin Tendulkar.
With said that, here we’ll give an analytical look at the three reasons why Virat Kohli could dominate the entire calendar year of 2023 with the bat.
Seems to have gained the old touch of confidence
Just after the conclusion of Virat Kohli’s impressive ton against the Islanders in Guwahati, former Indian opener, Wasim Jaffer came up with a tweet in which he lavished praise on Virat Kohli. Jaffer also acknowledged the greatness and the confidence that he acquired by gaining back his rhythm.
“Sher ke muh khoon lag gaya hai. Is saal bohot shikar hone wale hai! (Lion has smelt blood. There are going to be a lot of prey this year.),” read the tweet posted by Wasim Jaffer on his official Twitter handle.
And, to be precisely honest, Jaffer contains a sense in his tweet as the 34-year-old has seemed to get back to the older purple patch with the bat that he is known for. So, it would be a perfect reason for Virat’s dominance as a batter in the further calendar year of 2023.
A positive change in the mindset
The veteran Delhi batter had changed since the time he scored his 71st international century and made a comeback in the Asia Cup 2022. Kohli himself also indicated the changes that he has felt in his batting and mindset while going into the middle.
“You do not need to complicate things. You go out there and play without any fear, I can't hold on to things. You have to play for the right reasons and almost play every game like it's your last and just be happy about it. The game is going to move on. I am not going to play forever, I am in a happy space and enjoying my time playing,” said Kohli during the post-match presentation after winning the ‘player of the match award.
The intensity and the way Kohli expressed himself after a break has developed a sense of maturity within his mindset. He has become calmer in comparison to the attitude that he had earlier while representing the Indian team.
Freedom with the presence of young faces and their blistering intent
In the last couple of months, the Indian team management has been on the receiving end of criticism for making constant changes and giving rest to the senior players. It has also worked as an obstruction in the momentum of the team. Meanwhile, the only good thing that happened to the Indian team is youngsters taking responsibility.
This attitude of the new entrants and less-experienced individuals like Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, and a few others will surely help Virat Kohli to play with a free mindset. The 2011 World-Cup winner batter would be completed in a different mode having fewer burdens and responsibilities on him.
