Babar Azam and Co. locked horns against Sri Lanka in a must-win encounter in the Super Fours of the Asia Cup 2023 on September 14 at R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Notably, the Pakistan team had lost the opener, Babar Azam, for 29 runs, whereas star pacer Pramod Madushan dismissed Fakhar Zaman for just four runs during the fifth over to give a sign of relief to his side in the do-or-die clash. Earlier, Pakistan skipper Babar Azam won the toss and invited the home team to field first.
After opting to bat first, the Pakistan team had a decent start as the great batter Shafique scored a half-century and guided them to post 100 runs in just 20 overs. Meanwhile, Pakistan’s batters will be looking to post a great score to qualify for the finals and face Team India on September 17 in Colombo. Star opener Fakhar Zaman has not had much success in recent times, especially in the Asia Cup 2023, and will be looking to get back on track ahead of the ODI World Cup.
Fakhar Zaman has not had much success in recent times
Speaking about Pakistan’s last campaign, Babar Azam and Co. registered a massive 3-0 win against Afghanistan in the three-match ODI series. Following that, the Pakistan team registered a big win against Nepal in their opening game of the Asia Cup, whereas Team India was bundled out for just 266 runs in the second game of the Asia Cup. Star opener Fakhar Zaman has not had much success in recent times, especially in the Asia Cup 2023, and will be looking to get back on track ahead of the ODI World Cup.
After qualifying in the Super Fours, they registered a great win against Bangladesh but also got a massive loss against India on September 11, which decreased their net run rate while placing them at the third of the points table to face Sri Lanka in the must-win encounter to face yet again the archrivals during the final match.
Meanwhile, the match has been reduced to 45 overs per side as the rain halted play, which allowed them to kick off at 5:15 IST. The rain once again stopped the play after 27.4 overs.
