On 12 September, India registered a 41-run win over Sri Lanka in their second ‘Super 4’ clash of the ongoing Asia Cup in Colombo. It was a low-scoring thriller as Team India’s bowlers successfully defended 213 runs. However, Dunith Wellalage won the Player of the Match award for his contribution with both the bat and ball.
The 20-year-old all-rounder lit up the Premadasa Stadium with his maiden fifer and an unbeaten knock of 42 runs off 46 balls. But, it all went in vain as India registered the victory and qualified for the final. Though it was a great game of cricket, after the match, a video went viral where fans of both teams were team engaging in an ugly fight.

“We definitely want to play on pitches like to see what we can achieve.” – Rohit Sharma
Speaking of the match, Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to bat first. But, apart from the skipper’s 53-run knock, only three other batters came up with some contributions as India got bundled out for 213 runs in 49.1 overs. Sri Lanka spinners; Dunith Wellalage (5 wickets), Charith Asalanka (4 wickets), and Maheesh Theekshana (1 wicket) took all of India’s 10 wickets on a track where the balls were seen gripping and coming slow on the bats. But, in reply, the Lankans got bundled out for just 172 runs in 41.3 overs.
Kuldeep Yadav took four wickets while both Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah grabbed two wickets each. Hardik Pandya and Mohammed Siraj took one wicket each. After the win, Rohit said: “It was a good game. For us also to play a game like that under pressure. Challenged a lot of aspects of our game. We definitely want to play on pitches like to see what we can achieve. [Kuldeep?] Again for the past year or so bowling really well. He’s worked hard on his rhythm and you can see the results in the last 15 ODIs he’s played. He gives us a lot of options. So going forward it’s a pretty good sign.”
