Over the years, WWE has seen a lot of players wearing a mask before entering the ring. From 1972 to 2022, a lot of players wore a mask before coming to play the game. In the last 50 years, the tradition has passed from generation to generation. On the other hand, there are quite a few players who wore a mask for a game or two but the fans are unaware of.

These players have a huge fan following and are considered the legends of the game. Talking about the reasons for wearing a mask, some have done it for safety reasons. On the other hand, some have done it for a short period of time. In this listicle, we will have a look at five WWE legends who wore a mask but fans aren't aware of this.

1. The Sultan - Rishiki 

The Sultan did masked stints multiple times. He is known for his 'Too Cool' role. However, not many remember his stint as The Sultan.

In 1996, he and his family started wearing red-colored masks. Rishiki, however, ceased to impress the crowd. After a long while, he dropped the masks after only one successful game against Rocky Maivia.

2. Andre Giant 

The legendary player started tormenting the players in 1973. Till the next 13 years, he was one of the undisputed champions of the game. In 1986, he took a break after being diagnosed with acromegaly.

Upon his return, he didn't show up for a game which led to his getting banned. The fear of shame led him to start doing masked stints in the game. The gimmick lasted until the end of October 1986.

3. CM Punk 

In 2009, CM Punk formed a team called The Straight Edge Society. After a while, the leader of the group, Punk got into a fight with Rey Mysterio. This led to the blowoff match at Over The Limit in May 2010.

Had Mysterio lost it, he had to join the Punk-led side. As it turned out, Mysterio won and went on to shave the bald head of CM. After this, he started wearing a black mask to conceal his baldness.

4. Elias

Elias aka Jeffrey Daniel Sciullo made his debut under the name Elias Samson in 2014. After a good start to his career in the first three years, he started struggling. He portrayed an alter-ego named “El-Vagabundo.” for the last game he played under the brand - NXT.

Oney Lorcan unmasked Elias after defeating him in a must-win game. After this, the company decided to drop his masked role for unknown reasons and their are endless speculations around it.

5. The Undertaker 

A lot of fans might have seen The Undertaker being masked. This is not something that is unusual for the fans. However, the reason for this was him hiding the fact that he had a facial injury.

He wore a Phantom mask for this. The gimmick lasted till Diesel unmasked him at the 1996 Royal Rumble.
