The 2024 Women's Premier League (WPL) is currently underway (Saturday, December 9) in Mumbai, with all five franchises engaging in a bidding war. A total of 165 players, including 61 overseas, have registered for the auction. With a maximum of 30 slots to fill, team owners and management are aiming to bolster their squad with some impactful players.
The event, which started at 3 PM IST, has completed three rounds so far. Some of the notable signings were Kashvee Gautam sold to Gujarat Giants (GG) for Rs 2 crore, Vrinda Dinesh sold to UP Warriors (UPW) for Rs 1.30 crore and Annabel Sutherland sold to Delhi Capitals (DC) for Rs 2 crore. Kashvee became the most expensive uncapped player to be sold in the history of WPL.
GG faced serious competition from UPW as the two sides were in a heated competition for Kashvee. The 20-year-old right-arm pacer joined Australia all-rounder Sutherland to become the most expensive player sold in the 2024 WPL auction.
UPW were one of the active franchises in the 2024 auction. Officials were jubilant when they snapped up the services of uncapped Indian cricketer Vrinda for a hefty sum after facing serious competition from multiple franchises. Meanwhile, a woman at the UPW Round Table caught the attention of fans.
She is Jinisha Sharma, the Director of Capri Sports. For the unversed, the Lucknow-based franchise UPW is owned by Capri Global. Prior to her entry into sports, Jinisha served as the principal of ESG and Impact at Capri Global. Notably, her father Rajesh Sharma is the owner of Capri Global.
UPW had a decent campaign in the inaugural WPL season. The team led by Alyssa Healy finished third in the points table with 8 points from 8 matches and qualified for the playoffs. However, they lost to Mumbai Indians (MI) by 72 runs in the Eliminator match.
