'Babar Azam ko isse kam milta hai' - Fans react to Delhi Capitals signing Australia's Annabel Sutherland for INR 2 crore in WPL 2024 auction

The much-awaited auction for the second edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) is currently (Saturday, December 9) underway in Mumbai. The first round of auction was not very lively as all the five franchises did not engage in an intense bidding war. Many notable names went unsold and only 5 players were sold in the list of capped players.

Australia's Annabel Sutherland was the highlight in the opening phase, earning a whopping INR crore signing from Delhi Captials (DC). The all-rounder's base price was Rs 40 lakh lakh. She was part of the inaugural WPL season, bought by Gujarat Titans (GG) for Rs 70 lakh. She played only four matches, scoring 48 runs and picking 3 wickets, and was released in the off-season. 

Mumbai Indians (MI) were also compteting for her alongside DC. However, when the price hit  Rs 2 crore mark, the defending champions pulled out of the bidding. Sutherland's spectacular outing in the 2024 Women's Big Bash is what attracted the franchise to go all out for her. She became the highest scorer for Melbourne Stars with 288 runs from 14 innings. She also claimed 23 wickets in the season, including an outing of 4/22.

Australia batter Phoebe Litchfield sold to GG for 1 Crore. Australia all-rounder Georgia Wareham sold to RCB for 40 Lakh. UP Warriorz Meanwhile, acquried Danni Wyatt for 30 Lakh and GG bought Meghna Singh for 30 Lakh.

A total of 165 players from five franchises have registered for the auction. Team India vice-captain Smriti Mandhana was the most expensive player in the maiden WPL season as she was signed by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for Rs 3.40 crore.
