Day 1 ended with India at 208/8 and the India team managed to add up only 37 runs. The silver lining for the Indian team was the century from KL Rahul. Forging small partnerships with lower-middle-order batters and tailenders, the star India batter secured his 8th Test century, guiding India to a respectable first-innings total of 245 runs.

Leading the scoring charts with a score of 101, Rahul played a gutsy knock towards the end of the innings, showcasing exquisite white-ball cricket shots to reach his century. This marked his second century at Centurion, making him the first batter to achieve this feat. Additionally, he holds the record for the highest score by a wicketkeeper-batter on South African soil.

Dean Elgar’s help South Africa tighten their grip on the Test match

The India team did not have a good time with the ball in hand despite getting the wicket of Aiden Markram early on. The duo of former South African skipper, Dean Elgar and Tony de Zorzi took the attack back to the Indian bowlers. Especially, Elgar was the one who kept on dealing with boundaries. However, it was veteran Indian speedster Jasprit Bumrah who brought India back into the game. Bumrah picked up the wicket in two consecutive overs to bring India back into the game.

Then again it was debutant David Bedingham and Elgar who stitched a brilliant partnership for the fourth wicket of 131 runs. But the day indeed belonged to South African legendary batter Elgar. In his final Test series, Elgar aggressively approached the Indian bowling from the start. The renowned South African player notched his 14th Test century, comprising 19 boundaries.
