KL Rahul yet again was the only man who put up a fight against a rampaging South African pace attack. Barring a brief resistance from Virat Kohli and Shardul Thakur, none of the Indian batters could handle the spicy pitch.

Rohit Sharma and his Indian side were put into bat first after Bavuma won the toss. The start of the game saw a delayed start thanks to overnight rain. Three players made their Test Debut on Tuesday with Prasidh Krishna playing his first game. David Bedingham and Nandre Burger were the players who made their debut for the home side.

Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma added 13 runs for the first wicket before the Indian skipper fell to Rabada for 5. Nandre Burger then gave India two successive jolts with the wickets of Jaiswal and Shubman Gill.  Shreyas Iyer and Kohli counter-attacked as the pair added 68 runs for the fourth wicket as India went to lunch at 91/3.

The first over after lunch saw Rabada go through the defenses of Iyer to dismiss for 31. A few overs later the pacer got the big wicket of Kohli caught behind for 38.  Shardul Thakur and KL Rahul then added 43 runs before the Indian all-rounder became Rabada’s 5th wicket. With wickets falling at the other end, KL Rahul decided to attack and during the day reached his half-century. Mohammad Siraj and KL Rahul were at the crease when the weather played spoilsport yet again.

Stumps were drawn early with 31 overs still left to play in the day. Team India will hope that KL Rahul can continue his prolific form with the bat and score yet another century. The last time India played a test match at this venue, the Indian batter had scored a ton to help Team India win the test.
