Scoring a century could be a dream come true for any cricketer and the first of many becomes, even more, special as it might be the start of something special. Eventually, it was the case with Ishan Kishan on December 10, Saturday against Bangladesh, as the southpaw went on to convert his first hundred to a double century and eventually scored the fast 200 in ODIs.
However, Kishan is not the first on earth to smash double centuries and it is a known fact that the likes of Virender Sehwag, Rohit Sharma, and Sachin Tendulkar have already achieved the feat with the Indian skipper Rohit breaching it thrice.
As things stand, let us take a look at the five fastest double centuries of all time in ODIS:
5) Fakhar Zaman - 148 balls
Fakhar Zaman is considered to be one of the best batters to have played for Pakistan in recent times, next to the Men in Green’s skipper Babar Azam. Notably, Zaman outclassed in the 50-over format and impressed everyone with his performances.
As things stand, during the fourth ODI against Zimbabwe in July 2018, Zaman brought up his double-century of 148 balls and helped Pakistan put on a total of 399 on board at the end of the first innings, which the Men in Green won as one could expect.
4) Sachin Tendulkar - 147 balls
Sachin Tendulkar, often considered to be the greatest batter to have played the sport after Don Bradman, brought up the first-ever double century in the ODI format during the second ODI against South Africa in February 2010 at Gwalior.
Notably, Tendulkar was the first person on earth to bring up a double century in the 50-over format and it came off 147 balls. It remains to be the greatest innings played by him in the format, given that it came in a winning cause as Proteas lost the match by 153 runs.
3) Virender Sehwag - 140 balls
Virender Sehwag, the former Indian opener, scored his first-ever double-century in the fourth ODI against West Indies in December 2011 and created history by becoming the second Indian batter to achieve the massive feat then.
On the back of his stupendous 219, India reached a massive score of 418 at the end of the first innings. Much to the delight of the Indian fans, the pacers bowled out the Caribbean camp for 265 runs and won the game in style.
2) Chris Gayle - 138 balls
Chris Gayle, the West Indian cricketer, is probably the most threatening batter to have ever played the sport and the left-handed batter used to give nightmares to the bowlers during his international stint with West Indies.
Eventually, Gayle holds a double century to his name and it came in the 2015 50-over World Cup against Zimbabwe. As things stand, the left-handed batter achieved the feat in just 138 balls and scored the fastest-ever double-century then.
1) Ishan Kishan - 126 balls
Ishan Kishan, the Indian batter, scored a double century, eventually converting his first-ever international hundred into a big one. To add more, Kishan managed to gather 210 runs off 131 balls in the third ODI against Bangladesh on December 10, Saturday.
Much to the stupefaction of the Indian fans, Kishan achieved the feat off just 126 balls and broke Chris Gayle’s record for the fastest double-century in the history of ODI cricket. Eventually, Kishan became the youngest to score a 200 in the 50-over format.
