Wrestler Sumit Malik qualifies for Tokyo Olympics in men's 125kg category

Indian wrestler Sumit Malik stormed in the final of the World Wrestling Qualifiers in Sofia, Bulgaria which has also ensured his ticket for the 2021 Tokyo Olympics in the men’s 125kg event.

Indian wrestler Sumit Malik stormed into the final of the World Wrestling Qualifiers in Sofia, Bulgaria which has also ensured his ticket for the 2021 Tokyo Olympics in the men’s 125kg event. He is the seventh Indian and fourth in the men's category to book a berth in the marquee event.

Other than him, six wrestlers - Ravi Dahiya (57kg), Bajrang Punia (65kg), Deepak Punia (86kg) in the men’s freestyle category have qualified. In addition, three women's wrestlers (Vinesh Phogat 53kg, Anshu Malik (57kg) and Sonam Malik (62kg) will also aim for a medal in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. World Wrestling Qualifiers, in Sofia, Bulgaria is also an opportunity for as many as nine grapplers to book their tickets to the Tokyo Olympics

Sumit Malik (125kg) picked up an emphatic 5-0 win over Jose Diaz Rovertti of Venezuela to march into the final of the World Wrestling qualifiers and book his berth for the Tokyo Olympics.

However, the other two Indians, Satyawart Kadian (97kg) and Amit Dhankar (74kg), also competing in the event, lost their matches and failed to make it to the Tokyo Olympics. Seema (50kg), Nisha Dahiya (68kg) and Pooja Sihag (76kg) will be in action from the women’s freestyle category later in the tournament.

 Meanwhile, in the men’s Greco-roman section, Sachin Rana (60kg), Aashu (67kg), Gurpreet Singh (77kg), Sunil (87kg), Deepanshu (97kg) and Naveen Kumar (130kg) would also aim for a ticket to Tokyo Olympics.
