After the ODI World Cup 2023 game against Afghanistan, the Indian players had a medal-awarding session, like they had after the Australia encounter. After that game, former India skipper Virat KohliΒ got the award of the best fielder. This time around, he rewarded the same to Shardul Thakur. The latter took a great catch to send back dangerous, Rahmanullah Gurbaz off Hardik Pandya.

Talking about the game, the Afghans won the toss and elected to bat first in Delhi. They had a poor start as they lost three wickets for 63 runs with Jasprit Bumrah, Thakur, and Pandya taking one each. At this stage, the likes of skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi and all-rounder Azratullah Omarzai (62) put together 121 runs before Pandya removed the latter. Former skipper Mohammad Nabi (15) played a slow innings which is why the momentum was snatched from the team.

They kept losing wickets in the last few overs and were restricted to 272/8. In reply, the home team had a dream start with skipper Rohit Sharma scoring 131 off just 84 balls including 16 fours and five sixes. After him, Virat Kohli scored a fifty, and Ishan Kishan (47) got some useful runs. In the end, they chased down the target in 35 overs with eight wickets in hand.

It was a good win for us: Rohit Sharma

"Was a good win for us. Important to get the momentum at the start. You will be put under pressure. There will be a spell from the opposition and we'll have to absorb the pressure. We absorbed it well. For now, it's leaving what's happened aside and move on. You've got players with different skillsets bringing different attributes, which is good for the team.

"We got batters who play freely and fearlessly. When you have all-round players, things take care of themselves. In WCs, you need to respond with different styles of play. Looking at India Pakistan like we did this game. Don't want to worry about the external favours. We'll treat every game like that: how the pitch plays, conditions and combinations, etc," India skipper said in the post-match.
