The ODI World Cup 2023 witnessed its first thrilling game of the tournament in Chennai on Friday. South Africa beat Pakistan by just 1 wicket to nearly knock them out of the tournament. Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir has called out Babar Azam for his lacklustre show with the bat during the tournament so far.

Babar Azam the Pakistani skipper has attracted criticism in recent times for his inconsistent show with the bat. Many cricket experts not only in Pakistan but also across the world have been critical of Babar Azam.

The loss on Friday in Chennai has now put Pakistan in sixth place with four points from six games. Pakistan will next play Bangladesh and have to win all their games to entertain the minuscule chances of making it to the final four.

Former Indian star and two-time World Cup winner Gautam Gambhir came up with some scathing comments on Babar Azam. The 42-year-old said, “Babar Azam hasn’t played any impactful innings. Records and rankings are overrated. The real number 1 is the one who wins matches”. The comments were made during the end of the game analysis on Star Sports India the official broadcaster of ODI World Cup 2023.

Before the start of the tournament, Gautam Gambhir had predicted Babar Azam to score a few centuries. The former Indian star Babar Azam had the capability to set the ODI World Cup 2023 tournament on fire with the bat.

Till now the Pakistani skipper has been able to score just three half-centuries with the bat. His first meaningful knock came in the big game against India before he was dismissed by Mohammed Siraj. His last two half-centuries have come in successive games versus Afghanistan and South Africa. All of Babar Azam’s knocks were in vain as they resulted in massive losses for his team.

Gautam Gambhir also slammed the Apex Cricket Body over the controversial umpiring calls on Friday. The 42-year-old said “I am not saying this because Pakistan lost the game. This happened with South Africa as well and they should make the rule clean. The batter should be declared out if the ball clips the bails”
