Defending champions England have been knocked out of the 2023 ODI World Cup after getting thrashed by five-time champions Australia. Jos Buttler and Co. started their campaign with a loss against New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium. Now they have officially booked their return ticket from the same venue after a 33-run loss to the Aussies on Saturday. The Pat Cummins-led side, on the other hand, climbed to the third position and almost secured a semi-final spot.

After being asked to bat first, Australia managed to post a respectable total of 286/10 in 49.3 overs. This time, there was no show from David Warner and Travis Head as both the openers were sent packing inside 6 overs. Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne stitched a crucial 75-run partnership for the third wicket. Adil Rashid struck twice in quick succession to remove well-set Smith and Josh Inglis, giving England the lead.

Labuschagne and all-rounder Cameron Green then added a brief partnership, but Mark Wood trapped the former in front of stumps to shift the momentum. Australia were in a spot of worry, but their lower-middle order played some effective cameos to propel them to a decent total. Chris Woakes, who picked 4 wickets, was the pick of the bowlers for England. Wood and Rashid grabbed two wickets each.

Defending a modest score, Australia needed to take an early lead. Their star pacer Mitchell Starc provided exactly the same with a first ball wicket of dangerous Jonny Bairstow. Joe Root also had an off day but Dawid Malan and Ben Stokes played brilliantly to bring them back into the game. Jos Buttler continued his poor run of form as he followed Malan to the pavilion without making any impact on the scoreboard.

With Moeen Ali and Stokes batting in the middle, England had hope. The duo made a 60-plus partnership, but just when they looked dangerous, star of the night, Adam Zampa, got rid of Stokes. In the very next over, Australia got the upper hand when Liam Livingstone also went back. Some contributions from the tailenders brought the total to 253 but fell short by 33 runs. Right-arm spinner Zampa won the Player of the Match for grabbing 3 wickets for just 21 runs.
