Apart from a few good patches, the decision proved costly most of the time. Early in the game, Reece Topley removed in-form Quinton de Kock on the second ball of the game. At 4/1, the likes of Reeza Hendricks and Rassie van der Dussen put together 121 runs for the second wicket. Both batters scored their individual fifties but failed to get their centuries.

While stand-in skipper Aiden Marken got 42 runs, David Miller had a rare failure. With this, the Green Brigade was reduced to 243/5. At this stage, it looked like the team wouldn't even get to the 360-run mark. However, at this stage, the likes of Heinrich Klassen and Marco Jansen put together 151 runs in just 13.4 overs. While the scored his maiden World Cup hundred, Jansen got to his best batting score.

In reply, the defending champions were never in the game, needing to score eight runs per over. Jonny Bairstow's poor form continued as he was caught at deep square leg off Lungi Ngidi. On the other hand, Jansen, after doing well with the bat, managed to pick the wickets of Joe Root and David Malan, both down the leg side.

Ben Stokes (5), who made his return after injury, was caught and bowled by Kagiso Rabada. At one stage, the team was reduced to 100/8 with Gerald Coetzee taking three wickets and Ngidi taking one more wicket. With Topley not supposed to bat, the likes of Mark Wood and Gus Atkinson put together 70 runs for the last wicket. In the end, the team lost the game by 229 runs.
