Team India's standout performer, Shubman Gill, has unfortunately been ruled out of the highly anticipated clash against Australia, which is set to take place at the Chepauk Stadium in Chennai. Social media was abuzz with disappointment upon learning that Gill had fallen ill just before the opening game of the Men in Blue.

It was revealed that the star batter had contracted dengue during his stay in Chennai, leading to his absence from the stadium alongside Captain Rohit Sharma and the rest of the team.

Captain Rohit Sharma expressed that the medical staff and team management had given Gill every opportunity to regain full fitness, but it appears that the young opener couldn't quite overcome the race against time in his battle with illness.

Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma were both hopeful of Gill’s inclusion on Saturday

"The mood is pretty good as it is before the start of every big tournament. We've come into this tournament prepared really well, so quite confident about us skill-wise. We're looking forward to the game. Everybody's fit. Gill is not 100 per cent, but he's sick. So, there's no injury concern. Gill is not feeling well. We are monitoring him on a daily basis. We're going to give him every chance to recover and see how he feels. So, he's not ruled out yet," Rohit said in a pre-match press conference.

"He's feeling better today and the medical team is monitoring him on a day-to-day basis. We will take a call on him later. The medical team hasn’t ruled him out yet. We’ll see how he feels the day after tomorrow," Rahul Dravid was quoted as saying by the Apex Council yesterday.

Here are the Playing XIs selected by both teams for the marquee clash:
