In the ongoing 18th game of the ODI World Cup 2023, Pakistan won the toss and elected to bowl first. They were coming off a heavy loss against arch-rivals, India. On the other hand, after losing the first two games,  Australia won massively against Sri Lanka. Meanwhile, after being put to bat, they just managed to escape the wicket of David Warner.

Apparently, in the fifth over, the left-hander played a shot high in the air. Usama Mir, making his World Cup debut, was expected to take it easily at mid-on. However, to the shock of everyone, the leg-spinner dropped the catch. The ball didn't even touch his palms but his chest and went down quickly. This proved to be costly for the team, immensely.

The likes of Warner and Mitchell Marsh put together a massive 259-run partnership for the first wicket in just 33.5 overs. Both batters scored a hundred with Marsh getting his second ODI hundred. The right-hander hit 121 off 108 balls including 10 fours and nine sixes. On the other hand, Warner got to his third ODI World Cup 150.

His previous two 150s came against Afghanistan in 2015 and in 2019 against Bangladesh. Meanwhile, for the first time in the World Cup, Australia have put together more than 200 runs for the first wicket

Australia lost a lot of wickets but finished strongly in the end

After the fall of the first wicket in the form of Marsh to Shaheen Afridi, the team lost quite a few wickets, trying to keep the scoring rate going. Glenn Maxwell, who was promoted up the order due to his association with the Bangalore-based IPL side, Royal Challengers Bangalore, bagged a-first ball duck. After the wicket of Warner on 325 runs and him getting 163 runs, the team's scoring rate died down as they kept losing wickets.

Afridi completed his another five-wicket haul in ODIs and the five-time winners finished 367/9 on a slowish surface.
