After a fall of wicket, Angelo Mathews walked out to bat in sixth position. As Mathews stepped out to bat, the strap of his helmet snapped. During the wait for a replacement, Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan appealed, leading to Mathews being declared out. Despite subsequent discussions, Shakib's decision remained, leaving the umpires with no choice but to uphold it.

According to MCC rules, a batter should be ready to face the next ball within 3 minutes of a dismissal. However, in this case, Mathews was declared out after two minutes due to the playing rules of the World Cup. "After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless time has been called, be ready to receive the ball or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within 3 minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be timed out,” states the MCC rulebook.

It's worth noting that the group stage results of the ongoing ODI World Cup will also serve as the qualification mark for the Champions Trophy 2025. A win here will help Bangladesh stay in the race for the qualification scenarios. The team is currently ninth with just one win in seven matches. Meanwhile, they will also look to avenge their Asia Cup 2023 defeat against Sri Lanka.

On the other hand, Sri Lanka will be looking for a semi-final spot in the ongoing tournament. The team will need to win all of their remaining games to stay in the race for the semifinals. However, a loss here will eliminate them from the ongoing tournament. Meanwhile, Angelo Mathews' dismissal has tensed the situation in Delhi.
