They had a great start as Mohammed Siraj and Mohammed Shami took one wicket each and the NZ was reduced to 19/2. Rachin Ravindra could have gotten out early if not for Ravindra Jadeja dropping his catch. Meanwhile, Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell put together 159 runs for the third wicket. The former scored 75 off 87 balls including six fours and a six.

However, after the fall of the third wicket at 178, the team lost their last seven wickets for the next 95 runs. Even though Mitchell scored 130, Shami's five-wicket haul ensured that the two-time finalists were restricted to 273 all out. On the other hand, despite getting hit for 73 runs, Kuldeep Yadav took two wickets while Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah took one wicket each.

At the end of the first innings, the total looked like a below-par total. India openers, skipper Rohit Sharma and Shubhman Gill put together 71 runs in 11.1 overs. However, both batters failed to convert their start to a big total. Shreyas Iyer (33) was playing well but was caught by Conway down at the boundary.

Wicketkeeper batter KL Rahul (27) also started well but was trapped lbw by Mitchell Santner. On the other hand, Suryakumar Yadav, who made his ODI WC debut got run out and the team was reduced to 191/5. At this stage, Virat Kohli (95) and Ravindra Jadeja (39) put together 78 runs to win the game. In the end, the former missed out on his 49th ODI hundred but the team won the game by four wickets.
