Mumbai Indians (MI) on Friday dropped a bombshell on the cricket fraternity by announcing Hardik Pandya as their new captain ahead of the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL). The shocking decision to replace their icon Rohit Sharma left fans furious as social media witnessed a massive outcry by 'MI Platans'.

Rohit has been the face of MI ever since he assumed the captaincy in 2013. Despite giving them five IPL trophies in ten years and taking Team India to the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup, this captaincy transition did not go down well with their millions of fans. They lost over two lakh followers on Instagram after the massive step from the franchise.
Meanwhile, in a video that has gone viral on social media, a fan was seen burning the MI jersey in response to the decision by the franchise. Another video of a fan burning an MI cap is also circulating with the caption, "Rohit Sharma over anything".

MI drops emotional post for Rohit
Back in 2013, Rohit, who joined MI from Deccan Chargers in 2011, took over the leadership role from Ricky Ponting and changed the fortunes of the team. He led the team to their maiden title in his captaincy debut season and went on to win the 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020 editions. Under his guidance, talents like Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, Krunal Pandya and Tilak Varma have flourished.
Meanwhile, MI posted an emotional video on their social media handle, paying tribute to the veteran opener for his services over the years. “Ro, In 2013 you took over as captain of MI. You asked us to believe. In victories and defeats, you asked us to smile. 10 years & 6 trophies later, here we are. Our forever captain, your legacy will be etched in Blue & Gold. Thank you, Captain RO,” the franchise wrote.
