If reports are to be believed, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) are all set to make a massive change in their leadership group ahead of the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL). The 2016 champions are likely to replace South Africa's Aiden Markram with Australian pace bowler Pat Cummins as their captain. This can be considered a masterstroke from SRH as Cummins has the superpower to turn whatever he touches into gold since last year.
Cummins, who won the 'Cricketer of the Year' award for his unparalleled achievements in 2023, was signed by SRH for a whopping INR 20.5 crore. He is in fact the second most expensive player in the league's history. It would not be a surprise if the Hyderabad-based franchise handed the baton to Cummins, who led Australia to glory in the 2021-23 World Test Championship (WTC) and 2023 ODI World Cup and retained the Ashes.
Notably, the 'Orange Army' have not tasted success in the cash-rich league since winning the 2016 season under the leadership of David Warner. Markram led the side last year but the team finished at the bottom of the table despite having a formidable squad. However, the Proteas all-rounder proved his captaincy prowess in the SA20 (Twenty20 franchise cricket tournament in South Africa) by leading SRH's sister franchise, SunRisers Eastern Cape to back-to-back titles in 2023 and 2024.
Sunil Gavaskar backs Cummins to become SRH captain
Earlier, legendary batter Sunil Gavaskar had said that he believes SRH will appoint Pat Cummins as their captain after the franchise bought him for a staggering amount. According to Gavaskar, Markram was not up to the mark last season.
"I think Pat Cummins was a smart buy, maybe a little over-expensive. Smart buy because he will bring the leadership aspect to their team, which was lacking the last time around. Last time around, some of the bowling changes that we saw in crucial games were just head-scratching, and that cost them matches. So now with Pat Cummins coming in, I am pretty certain that he will be the captain of the team and that will make a huge difference," Sunil Gavaskar said on Star Sports.
Notably, SRH further strengthened their squad in the 2024 mini-auction by signing World Cup final hero Travis Head (₹6.80 crore), and spin wizard Wanindu Hasaranga (₹1.5 crore), among others. However, it will be challenging for the star-studded team to pick four overseas players.
Here's how fans reacted to reports that Pat Cummins could be SRH's new captain:
