After failing short of 400 runs in the first innings, it was up to the Indian bowlers to help India make a comeback in the Test match. After getting off to a brilliant start in the first innings, the English batting lineup found themselves on the receiving end of a riveting spell from India’s premier fast bowler, Jasprit Bumrah. Bumrah's second spell after lunch saw him claim two consecutive wickets of Joe Root and Ollie Pope, plunging England into significant trouble.

Following Bumrah's dismissal of Root with an outswinger, the fast bowler demolished Ollie Pope's stumps with a blistering yorker in the 28th over. This marked the fifth occasion Bumrah had dismissed Pope in 10 innings. Pope's wicket held significance, especially considering the batter's pivotal role in scoring a match-winning 196 runs in the second innings of the opening Test match in Hyderabad.

Pope's dismissal marked England's fourth loss in the second session of the match in Vizag, leaving them in a precarious position. This wicket was also the second wicket of the spell from Bumrah. In addition to this, with that wicket, India took overall four wickets in the pre-tea session as it minimized the advantage that England took in the first session of Day 2.

England crumble in their first innings

Earlier in the day, Yashasvi Jaiswal achieved his maiden double-century, propelling India to a total of 396 in the first innings. Jaiswal reached his double hundred with a six and a four off Shoaib Bashir, while the remainder of the team struggled with the bat in the first innings. In response, England made a promising start but suffered a flurry of wickets shortly after reaching fifty runs for the first wicket.

Zak Crawley, who was in fine form, relinquished his wicket attempting a big shot. Crawley's dismissal triggered a collapse for England, resulting in the consecutive losses of Root and Pope. After Tea, the Indian team kept under pressure as it was once again star bowler, Bumrah who dismissed Johnny Bairstow, and then it was Kuldeep Yadav who came back in his first spell after tea and picked up wickets of Ben Foakes and Rehan Ahmed to leave England struggling at 182/7.
