India vs Pakistan is a rivalry in every sport given the geopolitical differences between the two countries. On Wednesday, August 9, the rivalry took the form of hockey in the Asian Champions Trophy 2023. Team India won the game 4-0 and qualified for the knockout stages of the marquee competition. Skipper Harmanpreet Singh remained the star of the show with a brace.

Fans were surprised when Pakistan scored within minutes of the first quarter. However, the goal was ruled out for hitting the chest of a Pakistani player in the buildup. This acted as a wake-up call for the home team at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Hockey Stadium in Chennai. From that point in the game, it was all India. Skipper Harmanpreet Singh converted two penalty corners successfully and further consolidated his position on top of the highest scorer’s chart for the tournament with seven goals.

Pakistan were knocked out of the tournament

Later, Jugraj Singh’s drag flick resulted in the third goal for the hosts and Akashdeep sealed the deal over an already defeated team with his goal in the final quarter. India, therefore, finished the game with a scoreline of 4-0 in their favour. In the other game of the same group, Japan defeated China 2-1 which meant that Pakistan were knocked out of the tournament. India, on the other hand, finished as the group toppers and will move on to the semifinal stages where they’ll face Japan on Friday, August 11 at the same venue.

Another incident caught the eyes of admirers around the world. The crowd at the stadium in Chennai chanted the lyrics of A.R Rahman’s transition of ‘Vande Mataram’ titled ‘Maa Tujhe Salaam’. The song has become the unofficial or the second anthem for India in sports events. The same was the scene when the Indian Football Team played and won the final of the SAFF Championship against Kuwait in the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru. The videos of the incident have gone viral on the Internet.
