On 7 August 2023, Inter Miami FC took on FC Dallas in the Round of 16 of the ongoing Leagues Cup. All eyes were on Lionel Messi as he was enjoying great form for his new club. However, he did not disappoint as Messi scored a brace and Inter Miami managed to win the game in a penalty shootout (5-3).

After 90 minutes of play, the game ended 4-4 between them. But, Lionel Messi lit up the Toyota Stadium with a breathtaking free kick in the 85th minute and that levelled the game for his side. The video went viral instantly and fans went crazy seeing that. Messi also opened the scoring in the game and score a penalty also in the shootout.

Speaking of the goal, it was a trademark goal from the Argentine star as he has scored many goals over the years for his teams from the same position with his left foot. FC Dallas goalkeeper, Maarten Paes went full stretched but still failed to make any contact with the ball as the ball ended back of teh end at the top left corner. Speaking of the match, Inter Miami got the first breakthrough, thanks to Lionel Messi’s clinical finish from an assist from his former Barcelona teammate, Jordi Alba in the sixth minute. Then, in the 37th, 45th, and 63rd minute respectively, Dallas scored and the score was 3-1. 

It was looking like the end of the road for Miami but in the 65th minute, Benjamin Cremaschi scored a goal to make it 3-2. Things got worse when Robert Taylor’s own goal made it 4-2. After that, in the 80th minute, Marco Farfan’s own goal gave some hope to Miami as they were trailing by just one goal. Then, in the 85th minute, Messi produced magic with that free kick and finally, the game ended 4-4. In the Penalty shootout, Miami players managed to hold their nerves and won the game 5-3. With this win, they knocked out FC Dallas and qualified for the quarter-final of the tournament.
