A young footballer from Essex was mildly injured after a firework came out of nowhere and exploded near his leg during the match between Hashtag United and Concord Rangers. Matas Skarna, 16, who recently joined the Essex based club Hashtag United, revealed that he thought his career was over after the incident. "It just felt like my leg had literally exploded," he said as quoted by BBC.
"The pain for 10 seconds was bad. At first I did not know what had happened," he added.
Hashtag United were inching towards a comfortable win and were leading the match 2-0 when the firework exploded near Skarna’s leg. A few minutes later two more fireworks hit the ground after which the incident was reported to Essex police. Skarna said he was taken aback by the incident and thought he would never be able to play football again. Speaking about Skarna, he plays for the Lithuanian under-17 team as well.
"The goalkeeper came to check my chest, how my heart was beating and apparently it was right out of my chest and he told me to calm down," he said as quoted in the same report.
While the investigations are still on, the firework might have come from a private event happening nearby. Meanwhile, the match was abandoned after the incident.
Giving an update on injury, Skarna said his leg is covered with red patches but there is nothing serious. "I thought it would be worse. They said it's going to itch, it might hurt, but there's nothing really bad from it," he said.
We expect fireworks whenever @hashtagutd play but not like this!

Our player, Matas Skrna, is luckily ok but this could have been bad!
Game abandoned at 2-0 up as house where fireworks came from refused to stop. Two more landed near pitch. Police have been notified. Stay safe. pic.twitter.com/YP22OaLDb6
