The third match of the Round of 16 in the ongoing FIFA World Cup took place on 4 December 2022. Defending champions France took on Poland in Al Thumama Stadium. However, both teams came to this clash after losing their respective last group-stage matches. France lost against Tunisia by 1-0.

While Argentina defeated Poland 2-0. Stille, France sealed the top spot in Group D by collecting six points from three games. On the other hand, Poland finished in the second spot in Group C. They collected four points from three matches. So, the stage was set for a great match as big-name players like Kylian Mbappe, Olivier Giroud, and Robert Lewandowski were in action.

Speaking of the match, France got an early chance to take a lead when Rafael Varane managed a header from Antoine Griezmann’s corner in the fourth minute. Then, Aurelien Tchouameni had a shot from distance in the 13th minute. But, Poland’s goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny denied him with a comfortable save. But, in the 44th minute, Olivier Giroud opened the scoring for France. It was a clinical finish from the French striker while Kylian Mbappe assisted him. It was Giroud’s third goal in this World Cup. Karim Benzema missed the World Cup due to an injury. But, fans have not missed him so much until now as Olivier Giroud has lightened up the tournament with goals.

In the second half, Kylian Mbappe produced a masterclass, he scored a brace in the 74th and 90+1’ minute respectively.  Finally, Poland managed to pull back a goal as Robert Lewandowski scored a penalty in the last minute of the match. Thus, the match ended 3-1 and France qualified for the quarter-finals. However, it was a massive achievement for Olivier Giroud as he became the all-time highest goalscorer for France with this goal. Now he has scored 52 goals for France compared to the previous record holder, Thierry Henry who had 51 goals in 123 appearances. After such an achievement, fans went crazy as they shared their views on social media platforms.
