On 1 December 2022, Lionel Messi’s Argentina took on Poland in Staiduam 974 in the ongoing FIFA World Cup. It was a Group C game as Argentina were looking to win to get qualified for the knockout round. Before this clash, they suffered a shocking 2-1 loss at the hands of Saudi Arabia.

Then, Messi helped his country to win against Mexico by a scoreline of 2-0. So, all eyes were on Lionel Messi once again as fans were hoping for a better show. However, Messi had a good tournament so far. He scored two goals in two matches and had one assist also. But, he was disappointed after the loss against Saudi Arabia.

Fans started to blame FIFA and VAR for giving that penalty decision in favor of Lionel Messi and Argentina

After the Saudi Arabia match, Messi said: "There are no excuses. We are going to be more united than ever. This group is strong, and we have shown it. It is a situation that we haven't gone through in a long time. Now we have to show that this is a real group. It's a very hard blow because we did not expect to start in this way." But, speaking about their clash with Poland, Argentina started the match with more intensity. In the 10th minute, Messi had a shot.

But, Poland’s goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny made a comfortable save. Then, in the 37th minute, Szczesny went for a save, and his outstretched hand made unconscious contact with Messi’s face. Then, VAR checked it and gave a penalty decision in favor of Argentina. But, Messi missed it as Szczesny came up with a huge save. The Argentine was in shock after missing that golden opportunity. However, fans were not happy with FIFA and VAR for giving that penalty decision. They blamed them for giving a gift to Messi despite such a soft touch.
