The SAFF Championship 2023, hosted by India, reached its conclusion on Tuesday at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru. Team India defeated Kuwait in the summit clash 4-5 in penalties. This is India’s second consecutive success in shootouts following their success against Lebanon in the semifinal stages of the same competition.
This is India’s ninth win in the continental tournament in history. Indian goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu remained the hero of the shootout who made the winning save. Following this, the entire Stadium filled with home fans jumped in joy chanting AR Rahman’s iconic song’s ‘Vande Mataram’ verse.

Fairplay Award
The Fairplay Award, given to the Nepali football team for upholding the rules and principles of the game, was given as the first unique prize of the tournament.
Best Goalkeeper of the Tournament
Anisur Rahman Zico, the Goalie for the Bangladesh football team, was named the SAFF Championship 2023's Best Goalkeeper.
Highest Goalscorer of the Tournament
Sunil Chhetri, the captain of the Indian football team, scored six goals during the SAFF Championship 2023, making him the tournament's top scorer.
Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the Tournament
The Indian captain Sunil Chhetri was once again named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the SAFF Championship 2023 for not only scoring six goals during the competition but also guiding his team to victory.
Runners Up, SAFF Championship, 2023
The Kuwait football team won the prize for finishing second in the 2023 SAFF Championship. While each player won a medal, the squad also received a cheque for USD 25,000, which is equivalent to around 20 lakh and 50 lakhs in Indian rupees.
Winners, SAFF Championship 2023
The Indian football team that is hosting the tournament won the SAFF Championship in 2023. Throughout the entire competition, they went undefeated. In the group stage, they defeated Pakistan, and Nepal, and drew with Kuwait. After defeating Lebanon in the semifinal penalty shootout, Kuwait was defeated in the summit clash. The team also got a monetary reward of USD 50,000, or about INR 41 lakh, in addition to their medals.
