FIFA World Cup 2022, Match 55, Round of 16: Heartbreak for Spain as Morocco defeated them 3-0 in penalty shootout

On 6 December 2022, the seventh match of the Round of 16 took place in the ongoing FIFA World Cup. Spain locked horns with Morocco at the Education City Stadium. Spain came to this clash after getting the second spot in Group  E. They gathered four points in three games. They suffered a shocking loss at the hands of Japan.

On the other hand, Morocco created history when they qualified for the knockout stage. In Group F, they sealed the top spot with seven points in three games. They impressed everyone with their pace in the attacking department. So, the stage was set for an enthralling battle between these sides.

Both teams started the game steadily. However, Spain were dominating Morocco by gaining maximum possession of the ball. In the 27th minute, Spain had a chance to score the opener. Marco Asensio had a shot but it ended in the side net only. Then, in the 33rd minute, Noussair Mazeaoui had a shot to test Unai Simon. But, he made a comfortable save to deny him. 

After that in the 43rd minute, Nayef Aguerd’s effort went wide off the target and Morocco missed a chance to take a lead in the game. Thus, the first half ended 0-0. In the second half, Spain started the game with more intensity. In the 47th minute, Ferran Torres tried to penetrate the final third. But, Noussair Mazraoui committed a foul as Spain earned a free kick. Then, in the 55th minute, Marco Asensio gave a ball to Dani Olmo.

He managed to have a shot at the goal but Morocco's goalkeeper, Yassine Bounou saved it comfortably. Then, in the 78th minute, Olmo had a shot from outside of the box. But, his effort ended wide and far off the right post only. After that, Morata came close to opening the scoring in the 82nd minute. But, he hit the ball across the goal. Thus, the game finished 0-0 after 90 minutes as the match went into extra time. Both teams failed to score as the game ended 0-0 after extra time also. In the penalty shootout, Yassine Bounou save three penalties as Morocco defeated Spain 3-0.
