Atletico Madrid defeated their crosstown rivals Real Madrid by a 4-2 margin to book their berth in the Copa del Rey quarter-finals. It was two goals in extra time from Antoine Griezmann and Rodrigo Riquelme sent Atletico into the last eight. The Civitas Metropolitano stadium witnessed Atleti's sweet revenge for losing to Real Madrid in the semi-finals of the Spanish Super Cup.

A few days back, a thrilling encounter took place in Saudi Arabia, where Real Madrid defeated Atletico 5-3 to secure their place in the final of the tournament. In a similar fashion to the Copa, two goals came from Madrid in extra time after the regular 90-minute draw. However, on Thursday (January 18), the match was mostly dominated by Atletico.

Although Real Madrid had better possession than Atlético, the latter managed to get the ball through the opposition box more often than the former. Real's first goal (45+1') was a result of an own goal from Oblak, which leveled the scoreline after Samuel Lion netted in the 39th minute. Los Blancos had an opportunity to take an early lead (12th minute) had Jude Bellingham's thunderous strike not smashed the crossbar.

Alvaro Morata put Atletico on top just before the hour-mark, but just when Real seemed to have given up, Joselu found a way to score in the 82nd minute. That pushed the game into extra time, with Griezmann and Riquelme sealing the win for Diego Simeone and Co.

“It was an amazing goal, probably one of his best,” Simeone about Griezmann's goal. “We played a very good match and the players gave everything they had against a top opponent. It was a great match," he added.

Since their 1-0 league defeat to Barcelona in January 2023, Atletico is unbeaten in 25 straight games at Metropolitano Stadium in all competitions. Atletico's victory means Real Madrid's 21-match unbeaten streak ends, and they have yet to win the treble in 121 years.
