Indian athletes are all set to feature at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham. The 22nd edition of one of the biggest carnivals of sports competitions has been kicked off with the opening ceremony on July 28th (Thursday). Indian athletes are participating in various sports on the first day of the competitions.

Although, India had to go through a major setback just a few days ahead of the commencement of the Games. The Olympic champion javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra had to withdraw his name from the CWG 2022 due to an injury.

Almost a week back, the 24-year-old marked a historical day for India when he won the silver medal in World Athletics Championships. It was the first silver medal of India in the history of Worlds.

Nonetheless, there are many athletes who are ready to represent the country on the biggest platform. So, here we’ll have a look at 5 athletes who might bag a gold medal in the Commonwealth Games for India.

PV Sindhu (Badminton, Olympic medalist)

The Olympic medalist senior shuttler has recently won the Singapore open. Sindhu is coming off with a boosted confidence in the Birmingham Games. She has won two silver medals in the Olympics. So, this time it will be a good chance for her to change the color of the medal to yellow metal.

World champion shuttler made it to the final in the last edition of the Commonwealth Games in the Gold Coast. But unfortunately, she had to adjust herself with a silver medal by losing to fellow compatriot Saina Nehwal in the match for the gold medal.

Other than the singles competition, she will also play in the mixed team events to represent India in another category of Badminton competition. So, the 27-year-old has a good chance of finishing the CWG campaign with a gold medal.

Mirabai Chanu (Weightlifting, Defending champion in CWG)

The Imphal-based senior weightlifter Mirabai Chanu is the defending champion in weightlifting at the Commonwealth Games. She bagged a gold medal in the previous edition of the games on Gold Coast. Earlier than that, she also won the silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The 28-year-old has also a record in clean and jerk to his name. On the grounds of her stellar performances and current form, India can count on her with a belief in the gold medal.

Nikhat Zareen (Boxing, Women’s 50 kg)

The 25-year-old boxing prodigy stunned everyone when she won a gold medal in the Boxing World Championships held in Istanbul, Turkey, after defeating Thailand’s Jutamas Jitpong on the 19th of May, 2022. The Nizamabad-based talented boxer also had to go through a tough phase to get a chance at fair trials.

Considering her current form and the confidence she is coming off with, Zareen is expected to add yellow metal to her bucket list while coming back to India from Birmingham.

Ravi Dahiya (Wrestling, Freestyle, 57 kg)

The 23-year-old amazed everyone last year when he won the silver medal in the Tokyo Olympics. He is continuing his purple patch since then. Notably, Dahiya has lost only one wrestling encounter since last year and that was the very gold medal match of the Tokyo Olympics.

Following that defeat in the Olympics, the Sonipat sensation never looked back. At the beginning of this year, he ended up as the first Indian in history who won three consecutive three gold medals at the Asian Championships. Keeping his current performance in mind, the Indian camp can surely count on him for the brightest medal.

Bajrang Punia, (Wrestling, 65 kg)

Jhajjar-based senior wrestler and Olympic medalist Bajrang Punia is eyeing to win the third successive medal in the CWG to complete his hat-trick. He also won the bronze medal in the Tokyo Olympics. Speaking of his performances in Commonwealth Games, then he first won a silver medal in the Glasgow Games 2014 which he further converted into a gold medal.

Gold medalist of the Asian Games had to go through a lean phase due to a knee injury but he has recovered gradually. So, the 28-year-old will definitely want to continue the golden patch in the Commonwealth Games.
