Mirabai Chanu brings glory to India, wins first gold medal for country in CWG 2022

The 28-year-old Imphal-based senior weightlifter Mirabai Chanu has brought the first gold for the Indian contingent at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham. She participated in the women’s 49 kg category of weightlifting. He went on to lift the total weight of 201 kg to bag the brightest medal in the competition.

Other than Chanu, Sanket Mahadev Sargar won the silver medal in the men’s event before the gold came to India. Whereas Gururaja Poojary also bagged the bronze to increase the number of medals for India in the tally. Notably, it is the second successive gold medal for India’s Olympic silver medalist. She stunned everyone by lifting a massive weight of 88 kg in snatch followed by 113 kg in clean and jerk.

Mirabai Chanu won the gold medal even before her third attempt

On the grounds of her excellent performance, Mirabai has registered a new Commonwealth Record to his name. She was only required to complete her first attempt during clean and jerk to clinch the gold which she did it in an emphatic fashion.

Even after clinching the gold medal, she lifted 113 kg in her second attempt. Furthermore, in the third attempt, the Indian champion tried to lift 119 kg but this time she couldn’t execute the lift. Although, this miss didn’t bother her second consecutive gold medal in the Commonwealth Games.

Mauritius-based weight lifter Roilya Ranaivosoa finished up in the second position in the same event to win the silver medal. Whereas Canada’s Hannah Kaminsky went on to mark bronze to his name by lifting a total weight of 171 kg (74 kg + 97 kg).

Undoubtedly, Mirabai is one of the most celebrated and decorated weightlifters in India. Earlier than this gold medal in the Birmingham Games, she also won the silver medal in the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth. Later on, she changed the color of the medal to yellow metal in the Commonwealth Games of 2018 on Gold Coast.

Not only these medals, but she also bagged a gold medal at the 2017 World Championships and also registered numerous medals in Commonwealth Championships.
